Observable changes occur in the sky and landscape (ACSSU019)
Recording short and longer term patterns of events that occur on earth and in the sky, such as the appearance of the moon and stars at night, the weather and the seasons.

affect everyday life.life.(ACSSU002)
Linking the changes in the daily weather to the way we modify our behaviour and dress for different conditions, including different cultures.
This task card is to be used part way through a unit on the seasons, here in Australia and in other parts of the word including the differences between the northern and southern hemispheres. The class has already learnt about a few local weather patterns both long and short term. The children have also begun to use a science journal to record what they have predicted and observed. An activity that would complement this strand would be to get the children to create, either as individuals or as a class, a seasonal calendar.

Class discussion:
What do our silk worms look like? What stage are they up to? What do our sunflowers look like? What stage are they up to?
Do all offspring start out looking like the parent?
Science Journals
Write a description of the silk worms and the sun flowers and draw a picture to go with your description. Try to label anything you can on your picture.

Brief Overview
Task Card One
This PowerPoint is designed to be an introduction to this topic. It is in a printable format to make its use in the classroom flexible, if printed should be laminated due to the nature of the investigation. The task card includes hands on investigation into the effects of mixing materials together. Having this as the first lesson creates an example for the students to refer back to when completing further tasks. The investigation on the task card has been taken from The Usborne Big Book of Science Things to Make Do.
Task Card Two
This task card is designed to be implemented part way through the topic. The class has already been introduced to their class pet, a silk worm and have started growing their own sunflowers. They will be observing the life cycle of the silk worm along with their sun flower first hand. This task card introduces the idea that different life forms have different life cycles and gives students visual demonstrations of various types allowing for discussion.
Task Card Three
This in an online investigation found on the Learning Federation website with the code L3055.Set up wiring and stage lighting for a rock band. Add components to complete electrical circuits: simple, series and parallel circuits. Explore the effects of batteries and switches on current flows. Relate circuit diagrams to actual circuits. Test the direction that light rays travel. Assemble a spotlight and position its parts to create a range of lighting effects.
Task Card Four
This task card is to be used part way through a unit on the seasons, here in Australia and in other parts of the word including the differences between the northern and southern hemispheres. The class has already learnt about a few local weather patterns both long and short term. The children have also begun to use a science journal to record what they have predicted and observed. An activity that would complement this strand would be to get the children to create, either as individuals or as a class, a seasonal calendar. This online activity is called “Experience The Weather” and is found on The Learning Federation web site with the reference code L10. Students are familiar with the Learning Federation and have a pin to log in with.

Students know how to follow instructions to pose questions for investigations, predict what might happen when variables are changed, and plan investigation methods. They can use equipment in ways that are safe and improve the accuracy of their observations. The students learnt in year five that light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected and refracted. They know that, the use of mirrors can demonstrate the reflection of light.
